Gungrave: An exploration of the past

Gungrave opens thirteen years after Brandon Heat is betrayed and killed by his best friend Harry MacDowell. He is reborn through the use of necro-rise as Beyond The Grave, and begins a quest of revenge against the crime syndicate.

At first glance Gungrave is about a resurrected man fighting zombie monsters to upend a large mafia organization. In truth, after the first episode, the story then flashes back to the man's youth and tells of his journey from a quiet street teen to high level mafia hitman. The story is more about friendship, betrayel, power and love than zombies.

I highly recommend it.

Tried it, didn't like it. Admittedly, maybe I shoulda tried more than the first disk...
